How We Approach the Writing
We believe encouragement should hold up in real life. That means acknowledging what is difficult, being honest about what we know, and offering suggestions that leave room for different circumstances.
Sometimes a worthwhile piece helps you work something out. Sometimes it simply gives you something good to think about.
Respect for real life
Time, money, energy, and responsibilities affect what is possible. We take those limits seriously when offering suggestions. A small change may help with part of a problem without making the rest disappear.
We value taking responsibility for what we can influence. We also recognize that hardship is not evidence of a poor attitude, and a hopeful outlook cannot guarantee an easy outcome.
Room for enjoyment
Friendship, humor, curiosity, and a good afternoon deserve attention in their own right. A hobby can be worth having just because you enjoy it. The writing here leaves room for that, without turning every pleasure into a lesson or another task.
Care with facts and examples
We check factual claims and link to the research or reliable sources we rely on, so you can look for yourself. We distinguish opinion from fact and acknowledge uncertainty where it matters.
Imagined situations are presented as examples. We do not pass them off as personal experience or someone else’s true story.
When something needs correcting
We check reported errors and correct what needs correcting. Substantial corrections carry an updated date so you can see when a published piece has changed.
